Types of Degrees
Nearly anyone can earn an online advertising degree with a little persistence and self-discipline. Many colleges and universities offer degrees ranging from a two-year associate of arts (AA) degree to a bachelor of arts (BA), bachelor of fine arts (BFA), master of arts (MA) or master of business administration (MBA) degree.
An associate of arts degree in advertising takes approximately two years of full-time study to complete. Jobs requiring an AA are entry level. People with an AA in advertising do not work in managerial or supervisory positions. Most people earning an AA degree view it as a stepping stone to a higher level of education and better income.
Bachelor of arts and bachelor of fine arts in advertising are two four-year degrees that one can earn online. With a bachelors degree one can become a project leader and work in all aspects of advertising. People with a BA degree can be promoted into higher level positions within the company.
Masters degrees in advertising or in business administration (MBA) is usually a two-year program if one enrolls full time; most online business and advertising degrees are earned on a part-time basis.
When searching for a college or university that offers online degrees in advertising, be aware that advertising degrees are referred to by many different names, including information technology/branding, visual communication, marketing and so on. If in doubt speak directly to the school you are considering and confirm which of their degrees focuses on advertising.

Sales in generally an entry-level position. As most salespersons work on commission, one has the opportunity to make an excellent income - if sales is a natural talent. If selling is difficult, income can be nearly non-existent. Many salespeople are promoted to advertising or public relations positions.
The public relations team works primarily on promoting the company's image and products. Public relations people must be able to communicate well in writing and have good interpersonal skills.
Individuals working in advertising promotions are responsible for promoting the business at conferences, events, at company sales events and running contests. Promoters arrange for promotional gifts for distribution at events. The job of the promoter is to make the target audience remember the company.
Marketing and advertising are often confused. Marketing is involved with planning and executing sales strategies and designing ways to move the company’s product into the consumer’s hands. Marketers and advertisers work together to sell products.
Advertising is simply calling attention to a product or service so that the public notices it (and then makes a purchase). Advertisers plan and write advertisement copy for newspaper, radio, Internet, TV, billboards and other media.

Taking college classes online has both positive and negative aspects, depending on one’s needs. Here are a few to think about.
The best thing about earning an advertising degree online is the flexibility. With programs that are completely online, students can study when and where they like (so long as there is an Internet connection to access lessons).
In order to successfully complete an advertising degree online one has to be driven and self-disciplined. Enrolling in an online degree program is not a good idea for someone who procrastinates and cannot work alone. Lack of direct contact with other students and teachers is also viewed as a negative for some students.
6 Regional Accreditation Agencies
The U.S. Department of Education (USDE) and the Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA) recognize six accrediting agencies in the United States.
Each of the six accreditation agencies is responsible for making sure that colleges and universities in particular states and countries throughout the world meet minimum academic standards. The Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC), the Northwestern Association of Schools and Colleges (NWSCU), the New England Association of Schools and Colleges (NEASC), the Southern Association of Schools and Colleges (SASC), the Middle States Association of Schools and Colleges (MSASC) and the North Central Association Commission on Accreditation and School Improvement (NCA) make up the recognized accreditation agencies in the United States.
Distance Education and Training Council (DETC)
Although not every school with an online program applies for DETC accreditation, the DETC is recognized by the U.S. Department of Education and the Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA).
It is very important that a student enrolls in a college or university that is accredited. When checking a school, keep the names of the accrediting agencies in the back of your mind. Often unapproved schools will purchase accreditation from an unknown entity that simply exchanges their seal of approval for the school’s money.
Courses of Study
In high school, students interested in an advertising career should pursue any graphic arts, business or design classes their high school offers. Additionally, students should take English, math, science and history to round out their program.
In college, advertising programs will teach students how to design and write advertising that works. Students will also learn basic business principles and take classes in a variety of areas to satisfy the university’s general education requirements.
