Where does this come from?

The Bureau of Labor Statistics, a unit of the US government, classifies all workers into some 800-odd occupational categories.  We paid a army of freelancers to get their view on what type of degree a holder of each type of job would likely have majored in.  For pairs which had a high degree of consensus, we created a link between the degree and the job.

From this, we calculated the average salary for Avionics degrees and converted it into a lifetime value.  We then compared it against other degrees at the same level of schooling (such as associate's, bachelor's, or master's), so that you can make informed educational and employment decisions.

What an Avionic Degree Student Learns

As the demand grows for airline travel and more scientists search for other life forms in space, Avionics' graduates become more in demand. However, the students must possess a strong aptitude for math and science. The degree programs in avionics are varied. Students, for instance, may pursue Electronic Engineering Technology or Electrical Engineering, with a specialization in avionics. Some programs are more focused on Aerospace Engineering techniques and others are focused on management. Depending upon the student’s interests and skill level, there are several avenues to take for Avionics degrees.

Online Schools Offering Accredited Avionic Degree Programs

Georgia Institute of Technology

This program offers students a Distance Learning option for the Aerospace Engineering program of study. The program may not be 100% online, but students can gain a portion of their education through this online curriculum. The curriculum is in most respects equivalent to the on campus curriculum offered by the school. Students will learn their introductory math, science and other courses online. Other core curriculum may also be taught online as well. Those classes relating to design without laboratory requirements may be acquired through distance learning.

WyoTech

WyoTech is an online aeronautical school that offers students a more hands on experience in aviation and avionics. Students will learn about aircrafts from a mechanical and repair focus, rather than a theoretical approach. Students will be able to maintain aircrafts after completing this course of study. The class sizes are small for those who require specialized attention. Financial aid is also available to those individuals who need assistance with paying for their educational studies.

Delft University of Technology in the Netherlands

Delft University is one of the best Aeronautical schools in Europe and the world. There are two Nobel Laureates that graduated from Delft University and countless others that are famous for their contributions in the field of Avionics. Wubbo Ockels is a professor of the Faculty of Aerospace Engineering at Delft and was a flight crew member of the Space Shuttle Challenger. The founder of WiFi is also on faculty of this particular University as well.

Students who complete a program in Avionics will be equipped to be an well rounded aerospace engineer. The focus of this program is on research. Massachusetts Institute of Technology

MIT prepares students for leadership in design, implementation, and conception of aerospace engineering. Students will learn to operate aerospace and other related engineering systems and will learn to solve problems in the field of engineering. Students will be encouraged to invent and to patent systems throughout their career. Research is also a major component of this Avionics degree program. Many record setting aircrafts have been created by students and research faculty at MIT.

Depending upon the program of study, students will learn software, communications, networks, controls, human software interaction, simulation, modeling, system architecture, engineering principles, safety, economics, policy, risk management, thermodynamics, acoustics, combustion, controls, computation, design and simulation.

Georgia Institute of Technology

Georgia Tech’s aeronautical program has been in existence since 1917. It is one of the oldest of its kind. Georgia Tech had several of their faculty named to prominent roles in the aerospace industry. Dr. Braun, for instance, was named Chief Technologist by NASA. Dr. Robert Loewy was inducted into the RPI Hall of Fame and won the Daniel Guggenheim Medal. Students will be exposed to a variety of courses through the curriculum. Some of the courses include fluid dynamics, high speed flow, aircraft design, rocket propulsion, helicopter stability, orbital mechanics, and many others.

Embry Riddle

Embry Riddle provides students with a background in electronics, design analysis, avionics systems, and logistical support. Students will be required to complete a design project. Each project will be tested in the laboratory and at the Federal Aviation Administration. Students will learn proficiency in radar, navigation, communication, electronic instruments, transponders, distance measuring equipment, and global positioning systems.

Students will be well versed in applied electronics engineering, applied engineering mechanics, applied avionics engineering, and integrated logistics support by the completion of the program. The program is accredited by the Technology Accreditation Commission of the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. Students will also develop a strong foundation in the field of mathematics, natural sciences, and other applied scientific skills.

Prior to admission, students must have a background in physics, mathematics, and chemistry. Entry level calculus may also be required prior to entry. Students should be aware that the basic level courses are required as prerequisites for entry into the program of study.

The Wright Brothers

Orville and Wilbur Wright were two of the most famous individuals in the field of avionics. They were most well known for the creation of the first experimental aircraft. The Wright Brothers had several patents that were under dispute and resulted in a $2 million settlement in one instance. Orville Wright served on the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics, which was the predecessor to National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA).

Leornardo da Vinci

Leonardo da Vinci was a brilliant inventor and artist. He sketched inventions of several aircrafts or flying machines. The helicopter and hang glider were two of his most prominent sketches. He could not get the aircrafts to provide any lift. However, the hang glider was successfully constructed later from his sketches.

Neil Armstrong

Armstrong was credited with being the first man to walk on the moon. He was an aerospace engineer and a pilot. He was a graduate of Purdue University and University of Southern California. He served as a test pilot for many avionic creations. He was a pilot in Gemini 8, Gemini 11, and the Apollo program.
