Where does this come from?
The Bureau of Labor Statistics, a unit of the US government, classifies all workers into some 800-odd occupational categories. We paid a army of freelancers to solicit their view on what type of degree a holder of each type of job would likely have majored in. For pairs which had a high degree of consensus, we created a link between the degree and the job.
From this, we calculated the average salary for Engineering Technology degrees and converted it into a lifetime value. We then compared it against other degrees at the same level of schooling (such as associate's, bachelor's, or master's), so that you can make informed educational and employment decisions.
What Can a Student Expect to Learn from an Engineering Technology Education?
Students in engineering technology will learn skills within the field of engineering. These students will be equipped to support engineers following graduation. Basic engineering principles and technical skills will be acquired in order to support the engineering team. These students may then become employed in fields such as product improvement, manufacturing, construction, and engineering operational functions. In 2001, the Sydney Accord agreement acknowledged the engineering technology programs in several nations. Students must graduate from an accredited engineering technology program and have enough work experience to become a registered engineering technologist.
Students may learn programming techniques, along with Java. In this environment, students will learn:

Students will also learn exception handling and advance programming techniques. Microprocessor Architecture will also be introduced. Microprocessors are the main part of the electronics infrastructure. Students will learn assembly language required to control the microprocessor. Exposure to data communications, networking, operating systems, and database system design will also be covered. Students will learn C++ and SQL programming languages for databases.
They will also learn static and dynamic relocation, virtual memory, processor scheduling and many other tools necessary for operating systems. Each student should be well rounded in their knowledge of computer systems and applications upon graduation from the program.

Engineering technology programs focus more on the practical applications of engineering rather than the theory of the engineering. Students become more motivated by actual real applications than by theory in this particular program. Engineering technology students will take classes in applied calculus and college physics. Engineering students, on the other hand, will take theoretical calculus and university physics. Engineering Technologists will be able to apply engineering principles to the solution of industrial problems.
Students will study in state-of-the-art facilities and work with industry quality equipment. When the students enter the workforce, they will be prepared to make an impact on the first day of the job. The laboratory classes are all hands on and the assignments are project based. The students will also complete cooperative work in the field to prepare them for the work place. Students will learn critical thinking, problem solving, and team work. Students will also learn three dimensional modeling, computer aided design, and computer aided modeling.
University of Hartford
The University of Hartford offers students several engineering technology degrees in a variety of disciplines. Students may study Audio Engineering Technology, Electronic Engineering Technology, Manufacturing Engineering Technology, and Computer Engineering Technology.
Students in Audio Engineering Technology will study electronics, acoustics, and music to prepare them for the recording and music industries. Students will not only study electronics, but the will also study harmony, music theory, and sound technology. Graduates of this program will work in technical and support jobs to create maximum quality of sound.
Students may also attain a Bachelor of Science in Electronic Engineering Technology. Students will learn about microprocessors, controls and communications. Communications studies may consist of fiber optics, satellite, and telecommunications. Several programs are offered to allow the student to remain flexible in their schedule.
In the Bachelor of Science of Manufacturing, students will learn research and development, product installation and maintenance, fabrication, production and testing. California State University, Long Beach
Students may obtain a Bachelor of Science in Computer Engineering Technology. Students in this program of study will learn networking, data communication, data acquisition, oral and written communication, systems analysis and design, data administration, and management principles. This program is for individuals want to learn about the manufacturing of computers and the applications that often accompany the computers. Graduates of this program will find employment in hardware and software fields.
The University of Akron
Manufacturing Engineering Technology degrees prepare students to work with engineers, scientists and production personnel. Students will study work measurement, manufacturing computer applications, quality control, robotics, manufacturing work cells, and lean manufacturing. Students may also have the option to continue their studies. Those who continue will earn a Bachelor of Automated Manufacturing Engineering Technology. Students will participate in hands-on research. Students may learn about programmable logic controllers and computer numerical control machines.
Students will also have the opportunity to gain experience through an internship or a cooperative education program. Yassar Arafat
Yassar Arafat is a Nobel Peace Prize Laureate. He graduated as a civil engineer from the University of Cairo.
Neil Armstrong (pictured right)
Neil Armstrong received his Bachelor of Science in Aeronautical Engineering from Purdue University. He also received his Master of Science in Aerospace Engineering from the University of Southern California. Armstrong was recognized as being the first man to walk on the moon in 1969.
Herbert Hoover
Hoover graduated from Stanford University with a mining engineering degree. He later became the 31st President of the United States.
Lee Iacocca
Iacocca graduated from Princeton University with a Master’s Degree in Engineering. He later became a CEO and Chairman of Chrysler Corporation.
John F. Welch Jr.
Welch received his undergraduate Engineering degree from University of Massachusetts and his Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering from the University of Illinois. He later accepted a job as the CEO and Chairman of General Electric in 1981.
Leonardo da Vinci
Leonardo da Vinci was an engineer, painter, sculptor, architect and scientist. He was one of the great masters of the Renaissance period. He influenced Italian art posthumously. He conducted many scientific studies in the fields of anatomy, optics, and hydraulics. He loved research and knowledge.
Thomas Edison
Edison was a famous scientist and engineer who patented more than 1000 inventions in his lifetime. The light bulb was probably the most famous of all of his inventions. He also developed the kinetoscope, and the phonograph. Later he improved upon several designs of previous inventors including, the stock ticker, the telegraph, and the telephone that was originally invented by Alexander Graham Bell. He was noted for his quote that “Genius is one percent inspiration and 99 percent perspiration.”
Roberto C. Goizueta
Goizueta received his Chemical Engineering degree from Yale University. Later, he assumed the position as the Chief Executive of Coca Cola and former Chairman. He was a prominent businessman with many accomplishments.
