On the other hand, systems engineers analyze information systems that are highly complex and integrated to safeguard against security threats, to manage the control of access to the system, and to design the development of future security applications. They test information systems for quality assurance, improve system-wide performance, and manage the planning of projects. Both software architects and systems engineers have an advanced knowledge of physics, calculus, mathematics, physical science, computer science, and engineering. Electives in business writing and project management add value to daily responsibilities.

The Higher Learning Commission provides accreditation for the online university. Colorado Technical University is a member institution of the North Central Association.

The university designs the program to meet industry needs by teaching students how to integrate technology with business opportunities. Western International University
Western International University (WIU) provides a Master of Science, Information Systems Engineering, program. Similar to Colorado State University, WIU receives accreditation through The Higher Learning Commission.
Regis University
Regis University offers a Master of Science, Systems Engineering, program Regis University receives accreditation from the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools (NCA).

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), the need for systems engineers is expected to increase to 11 percent by 2016. Recent graduates of master’s degree programs capitalize on this opportunity over their counterparts with a bachelor’s degree in the field. In 2006, the entry-level annual salary of graduates with a bachelor’s degree was approximately $56,000. Graduates with a master’s degree earned an entry-level annual salary of $60,000. Systems engineers can earn as high as $119,000 annually and enter the field with little experience and earn as low as $49,000.
The need for software architects and designers is also expected to continue as students pursue advanced degrees in systems engineering. According to the website, PayScale, the entry-level annual salary for software architects is $35,000. Software architects with at least four years of experience earn an annual salary of $75,000. Engineers with more than 20 years of systems design experience earn approximately $119,000 annually.

John Couch (pictured right, photo credit boston.com) is a software engineer. A business executive at Apple, Couch helped to create and develop a computer for the company: the Apple Lisa.
Couch entered the software engineering field in 1972 at Hewlett-Packard. He relocated to Apple in 1978 and assumed a position as new products director.
After his years with Apple, Couch went on to serve in different capacities such as CEO of DoubleTwist, a biotechnology manufacturer, and as a resident scholar executive for the Mayfield Fund. Later he returned to Apple and assumed the position of vice-president of education.
