Connecticut is home to some of the nation’s most respected and selective public and private colleges and universities. Yale University, established in 1701 and located in New Haven, has been ranked as one of the nation’s top three private universities by U.S. News & World Report, while the University of Connecticut (UConn), a public research university that serves over 30,000 students across half a dozen campuses, is ranked by the same magazine as the best public university in New England. The Connecticut State Colleges and Universities (ConnSCU) governed by the Board of Regents includes four state universities, 12 community colleges, and one online college, Charter Oak State College. Connecticut’s Office of Higher Education administers state student financial aid programs, oversees the state’s private occupational schools, and licenses and accredits the state’s independent colleges and universities.

Most of Connecticut’s four-year post secondary schools have distance learning platforms in place. The private University of New Haven offers several online courses and an online master’s of science in criminal justice. The public University of Connecticut offers an online master’s of professional study in three different areas, as well as a selection of online undergraduate courses. Charter Oak State College is a public, regionally accredited, four-year online college, with several online degree programs designed for adult and non-traditional students. Yale University’s Open Yale Courses (OYC) are free, online lectures and materials from a wide variety of selected Yale College courses. No course credit, degree, or certificate is available for these free courses. Online courses and a relatively small number of online degree programs are offered by some of Connecticut’s two-year community colleges, including Capital Community College, Norwalk Community College, and Middlesex Community College.
