Individuals who receive a degree in Curriculum and Instruction should possess good communication skills, management skills, organizational skills, critical thinking or strategy skills and other skills. The staff may consist of counselors, librarians, coaches, technical staff, administrative assistants, and others. In order for students to achieve academic success, educational goals, standards, policies and procedures must be established. Educational administrators must also manage individuals responsible for budgets and record keeping. In universities, these responsibilities are divided among many administrators.
Responsibilities of Principals
Principals may manage elementary, middle, and high schools. Their responsibilities include devising mission statements and a vision for academic success by setting curriculum standards and initiatives. Principals make certain that students meet all local, state, and national standards. Students must be equipped to compete with other students across the nation. Principals must hire and evaluate teachers and other staff administrators. The must advise and set objectives for teachers, as well as, perform performance reviews.
Responsibilities of Provosts
Provosts or Chief Academic Officers will assist presidents by making faculty appointments. Their responsibilities also include making decisions regarding tenure, developing budgets and establishing academic policies. Coordinating activities of academic deans and deans of faculty is also a part of their responsibility. Directors of Development will assist the provost with fundraising and other activities.
Responsibilities of University Department Heads
These educators specialize in fields of studies, such as mathematics, English, or biological sciences. These individuals coordinate schedules, propose budgets, recruit, interview, and hire applicants. They also evaluate faculty, encourage faculty development and serve on a variety of committees.
Deans of Students and Directors of Student Services coordinate and direct admissions, health services, counseling services, foreign student services, financial aid, residential life, and career services. Social, recreational and other programs are also a part of this lifestyle. These educators may manage Registrars who are responsible for preparing student transcripts, evaluating academic records, assess and collecting tuition and fees, recording grades, planning commencement exercises and other responsibilities. Employment of the field of educational administration is expected to grow by 8 percent. The growth should take place over the 2008 and 2018 time period.
