What Can a Cardiovascular Technology Student Expect to Learn?
Graduates of a cardiovascular technology program will spend their career assisting physicians care for cardiac patients. Students will learn techniques in invasive cardiology, echocardiography and vascular technology. Students may be involved in invasive procedures, as well as, noninvasive procedures, such as electrocardiograms and diagnostic ultrasound. Cardiovascular technologists may be involved in numerous techniques such as balloon angioplasty. This procedure will clear blocked heart blood vessels by expanding an inflatable balloon in the artery.
Cardiovascular technologists help physicians implant pacemakers during open heart surgeries. Graduates will also be able to perform other non invasive procedures, such as ultrasound examinations. These are also known as echocardiograms. This procedure is often used to diagnose heart conditions and heart disease. The trans-thoracic echo will use ultrasound to obtain a diagnostic image. Images may also be obtained while walking on a treadmill.
Cardiovascular technologists may also use a Doppler echocardiogram to track blood flow in the heart and vessels. By-pass surgeries may be evaluated through the patient’s esophagus with an ultrasound camera as well.
Cardiovascular technicians may also perform electrocardiograms (EKG) for cardiovascular evaluation. Students will learn how to place the electrodes on the body to receive an accurate reading of the patient’s heart beats. Some cardiovascular technicians specialize in EKGs.
Holter monitoring is also a part of the cardiovascular technician’s responsibility. The technicians use these devices to monitor patients after they have experienced an irregular heartbeat. Patients will wear this monitor for 24 hours. The cardiovascular technician will pass the results of the tests to the cardiologist.
Cardiovascular Technologists will require one to four years in college depending upon prior training and experience. Students can pursue a variety of degree levels, although online masters cardiovascular technology degrees are difficult to find. Graduates must also pass a credential examination. The examination will reveal proficiency in a particular specialty. The credentialing examination with be administered by CCI. This examination will allow individuals to become a Registered Cardiovascular Invasive Specialist, Registered Diagnostic Cardiac Sonographer and Registered Vascular Technologist. Registered Diagnostic Cardiac Sonographers and Registered Vascular Technologists will be examined by the American Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonography. This profession was recognized by the American Medical Association in 1982.

Sanford-Brown University prepares students for a career in cardiovascular technology. Many of these programs can be completed between 1 and 3 years, depending upon the student’s prior experience. The students will learn hands-on experience in cardiovascular sonography.
Howard Community College
Howard Community College offers students a chance to pursue the cardiovascular technology. The program is a 2 year program through which individuals can attain a certificate or Associate’s degree. Students may complete courses in diagnostic and intervention procedures, medical instrumentation and x-ray theory. Students may also study microbiology, anatomy, biology, physiology, physics, math and inorganic chemistry. Student will engage in not only a clinical practicum, but also an internship. They will learn to become proficient with cardiovascular equipment. Students will receive a certificate in Advanced Cardiac Life Support as a part of the curriculum.
Top Colleges & Universities Offering Campus-based Cardiovascular Technology Degrees
Students may engage in a two year program that will prepare them to become an Echocardiographer. Students will study the core curriculum of the Health Occupations program. Students must successfully complete these courses before advancing in the echocarchiographer field of study. In the second year, students will engage in didactic and clinical training.
Students will prepare to study as cardiovascular technologists. This program of study is sensitive to the needs of American Indians and individual, cultural, and spiritual differences. Christian students will enjoy this nurturing Christian environment and clinical education.
Kettering College of Medical Arts
This particular school is associated with the Seventh day Adventist Church. Students will have the opportunity to obtain a cardiovascular technology certificate in radiologic sciences. Students will learn imaging techniques, human biology, nursing, medical sonography, physician assisting, health professions, and respiratory care. Students will be well equipped to assist cardiologists in the field upon graduation.
University of Florida
The University of Florida offers a program in echocardiography, Doppler, transesophageal echocardiography, dyssychrony evaluation, and stress echocardiography. The students will study these procedures along with others in the clinical laboratory. Students will learn to monitor the catheter position within patients during transseptal catherterizaiton for valvuloplasty. Students will focus specifically on ischemic heart disease in women. The University of Florida receives extensive funding for this program. Students will work with state-of-the-art computer image processing equipment and other diagnostic equipment. Students will be encouraged to engage in clinical research projects to use the tools in their native environments.
Famous People who Studied Cardiovascular Technology
Dr. Geiser is an echocardiographer at Shands Hospital at Cardiology West. NIH International and Cooperative Projects Study Section were pleased to have him serve on their team for four years. In 2004, he served as a Chairperson of the Annual Scientific Session of the ACC in New Orleans. Since 2007, he has served as the President of the National Board of Echocardiography. He also served as the Chairperson of the Certification Committee in Adult Echocardiography from 2001 to 2007 and the President of NBE from 2005 to 2007.

Jamil Tajik is a Lifetime Achievement Award Winner in the field of echocardiography and Doppler echocardiography.
Richard Popp served as Professor of Medicine at Stanford University. He received his undergraduate and medical degrees from Johns Hopkins University. He was known for his advancements in invasive cardiology. However, he later became known for his advancements in non-invasive diagnostic testing. He made significant contributions to color flow imaging, Doppler ultrasound, transesophageal and contrast echocardiography. He worked with Hewlett Packard to build one of the first two-dimensional ultrasonic imaging instruments. He is also a consultant for Agilent Laboratories. Among his numerous accolades is his Presidency of the American College of Cardiology. He also served as a trustee for the ACC as well. The American Board of Internal Medicine’s Cardiovascular Diseases Subspecialty Board also welcomed Dr. Popp’s medical expertise. He served as a member of the American Society of Clinical Investigation, the Association of American Physicians and a number of other associations.
Dr. Harvey Feigenbaum studied at the Indiana University School of Medicine in 1958. He is known for his contributions to the “Journal of the American Society of Echocardiography” and the related research in this field.
