Maryland is one of the best states in the nation for higher education, with colleges and universities in the state governed by Maryland’s Department of Education. On their website, prospective college students in Maryland will find information about distance education, the Southern Regional Education Board’s Electronic Campus, and MarylandOnline, which is a group of community colleges in the state offering online degree programs. Home to the prestigious Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, Maryland also boasts a notable public state school in University of Maryland. Maryland is also home to 6,300 colleges, schools, and research centers, whose employees make up 15% of the state’s workforce; 13,600 health and lifescience companies that account for 13% of the workforce; 15,000 hospitality companies and restaurants that make up 10% of the workforce; and 9,500 information and technology companies that account for 6% of the workforce. Maryland is also home to unique industries that make up smaller portions of the state’s economy, such as its 2,600 aerospace and defense companies, including 16 of the country’s top 25 companies, which account for 4% of the state’s workforce; 4,700 manufacturing companies which make up 5% of the state’s workforce; and 1,300 wind, solar, energy, and biomass companies to account for 1% of the state’s workforce.

Many of the colleges offer online programs for students, at the certificate and associate, bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral degree levels.
