New Hampshire’s higher education system has dozens of excellent colleges and universities offering a wide variety of undergraduate, graduate, and certificate programs. The University System of New Hampshire is the largest provider of postsecondary education in the state, serving about 30,000 students at four different institutions. The Community College System of New Hampshire is another major statewide system that consists of seven community colleges, serving more than 27,000 students every year. There are also numerous private institutions, technical schools, and online colleges throughout the state that offer both traditional and online degrees. New Hampshire’s Department of Education has a Higher Education Commission that manages public higher education institutions in New Hampshire. The Commission is responsible for regulating colleges and universities in New Hampshire, including all degree- and non-degree granting institutions.

There are several higher education initiatives happening across the state of New Hampshire. One of the major higher education projects is the Access New Hampshire Initiative, which aims to increase higher education access to students across the state and assist underserved populations. A big part of increasing access to higher education in New Hampshire is offering more online courses or degree programs at online and brick-and-mortar colleges. The state is working toward providing more flexible, cheap online degrees to first-time college students and returning students alike.

Many of New Hampshire’s colleges and universities now offer distance courses and online degree programs to students living in and out of state. The University of New Hampshire’s eUNH Online Learning program offers a wide variety of undergraduate and graduate distance courses. UNH’s featured online MBA program offers both fully online classes or blended courses taught by world-class faculty. Keene State College also has several distance education online opportunities, including six-week, instructor-facilitated courses, longer online open enrollment certificate programs, or educators’ professional development courses.

New Hampshire, the Granite State, is home to rivers known for fly-fishing opportunities, mountains, and state parks designed for hiking, camping, and exploring all of nature in four full seasons. The economy of New Hampshire continues its recovery, relying on a handful of industries to maintain its growth. In 2008, real estate was the state’s most profitable industry, accounting for 14.8% of the state’s economic output, followed by manufacturing, government, healthcare, and finance and insurance. The most popular industries are trade, transportation, and utilities; education and health services; government; professional and business services; manufacturing; and leisure and hospitality.

The state’s diverse economy allows for New Hampshire’s students to study a variety of topics. The state’s more than 40 public and private colleges, universities, and technical schools offer online degrees at the associate, bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral degree levels. To enter the most popular segments of New Hampshire’s workforce, students can earn degrees in engineering management, mechanical engineering, education, health administration, biotechnology, political science, management, or hospitality management. The state’s most profitable industries may require degrees in business administration, public administration, nursing, or finance. For those who want to work in one of the state’s many natural environments, a degree in wildlife management, hospitality, or environmental engineering may be ideal.
