Public higher education in North Dakota is served by the 11-campus North Dakota University System. The best known institutions in this system are its research universities, the University of North Dakota and North Dakota State University, but the system’s four regional universities and five community colleges also play a central role in educating students in North Dakota. Unlike other states that were forced to slash higher education funding during the economic downturn, North Dakota approved unprecedented increases in funding to the state’s colleges and universities.

While this infusion of financial support bodes well for the future of higher education in North Dakota, the state’s board of higher education still presses toward improvement, including the following goals outlined in its strategic plan:

  • Increase accessibility of the North Dakota State University system overall, including increasing the number of North Dakota high school graduates who attend NDSU institutions by 5%.
  • Increase higher education funding to where North Dakota ranks in the top 20% of states in terms of higher education support per capita.
  • Boost the state’s economy by increasing degree completion in high-need academic areas like agriculture, energy, health care, life sciences, and advanced technology by 5%.

Similarly, NDSU offers more than 33 online degrees and certificate programs in areas like nursing, human development, construction management, and software engineering.

Getting a Career in North Dakota With Your Degree

Agriculture has long been an important industry in North Dakota. More recently, the state has been experiencing an oil boom due to the discovery of the oil-rich Bakken formation in the western portion of the state. Degrees in petroleum engineering or environmental engineering could position people for top jobs in North Dakota’s flourishing energy industry, which is the third-largest industry in the state.

Despite the recent oil boom, agriculture is still the dominant industry in North Dakota, which is home to 31,000 farmers and ranchers. Degrees in agribusiness management, food science, agronomy, or animal science can prepare you for careers in North Dakota’s longstanding agriculture industry. A specialization or minor in horticulture, plant and soil science, and nutrition can help you focus your learning on a particular area of interest.
