Ohio’s higher education system comprises more than 100 institutions, ranging from two- and four-year colleges and universities to community colleges, vocational schools, and online colleges. The University System of Ohio is one of the largest comprehensive systems of public higher education in the country, offering both traditional and online degree programs. The system is made up of 14 state universities, 23 community colleges, and more than 120 adult workforce education and training centers that serve nearly 600,000 students annually. The Ohio Board of Regents is the state agency responsible for providing higher education policy advice and serving as the coordinating body for the University System of Ohio.

The Board is currently pursuing several higher education initiatives, specifically within the areas of college completion and unemployment in Ohio. The Board hopes to increase college completion rates in Ohio and close the state’s unemployment gap by graduating more students. A major part of the college completion initiative is encouraging students to remain in Ohio upon graduation, therefore stimulating the economy and improving the unemployment rate. Another statewide higher education initiative is to assemble degree plans that allow students to complete a bachelor’s degree in three years. This goal will save both students and Ohio institutions money and time.

According to JobsOhio, a partnership of economic development experts from across the state, Ohio has generated more than 127,300 jobs since January 2011 and is experiences its lowest unemployment rate (6.9%) since 2008. Key industries in the state include steel, machinery, and aerospace manufacturing industries, as well as healthcare, insurance, and professional services, according to Moody’s Analytics. Additional key industries, as noted by JobsOhio, include financial services, information services and software, agribusiness and food processing, biohealth, energy, and polymers and chemical. More than 1,000 internationally owned companies have a presence in the state, including Honda, Bridgestone, Hitachi, Mitsubishi, Chrysler, Rolls-Royce, Mettler-Toledo, and Nestle.
